Mike Haslam – Architect, Director

Mike is the director at Haslam & Co Architects and formerly co-director at Solearth Architecture for 15 years. He is a graduate of The Universities of Edinburgh and Bath, UK and is a registered architect and member of the RIAI, RIBA and Easca. Mike has extensive experience in the UK, where he worked with practices Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios and Edward Cullinan architects; in Germany with Boge Lindner-Boge and Urban Projekt; and in Spain with Estudio Gazapo Lapayese.

As director in Solearth he was responsible for major projects including the holistically designed Castle Espie visitors' centre in Ulster which has won multiple awards, a green prototype factory in Co. Wicklow, and the transformation of the award winning Airfield Estate in Dublin. As director of HCoA he sets both the business and design agenda of the practice with its emphasis on green design and community.

He has published many papers on architecture and green design in Ireland and the UK. He lectures in the Dublin School of Architecture, previously in the UCD architectural master’s programme and has been a guest lecturer at University of Bath, Technische Hochschule Aachen and University of West of England. Along with the Energy Research Group UCD, he was a lecturer in the professional CPD programme for architects on sustainability and served on the RIAI's Sustainability Task Force.

His research has included applications of round-wood structures; sustainable masterplanning; the development of theory on Slow Architecture; on Building Health (bau-biologie) and a MPhil into Natural Ventilation strategies as part of NZEBs.


Stephen Richardson – Architect, Associate Directoer

Stephen is an Architect as well as a Cabinetmaker and Architectural Technologist. He has a deep understanding of the human scale and of our interaction with structure, materials, and the environment. From this understanding comes the creating of an atmosphere and sense of place through expressive construction techniques and passive environmental design principles.

Stephen worked with Solearth Architecture before transferring to Haslam & Co Architects and becoming an Associate Director in 2022. He was project architect on Grow HQ in Waterford and on the Yoga Hub project now nearing completion in Dublin. Previously he worked for Palmer Whelan Associates and David Wright Architects.


CÉcile Buhler – Architect

Cecile is an Architect educated in France with a master’s in architecture from the University of Strasburg. She is project architect on domestic projects and architectural assistant on several public buildings within HCoA. Cecile has a particular interest in sustainable construction techniques having both theoretical and practical experience in earth and hemp build and low energy design.
